This chapter, the first of three on digital speech processing applications, focuses on specific techniques that are used in
digital speech coding. We begin by describing the basic operation of sampling a speech signal and directly quantizing and
encoding of the samples. The remainder of the chapter discusses a wide variety of techniques that represent the speech signal
in terms of parametric models of speech production and perception.
