In this chapter, we briefly review the history of sparsity methods in science and engineering. The chapter will motivate you to learn this topic. The content of this chapter is independent of the other chapters, and readers interested in the technical aspects of sparsity methods can skip this chapter without much effect on their understanding of the rest of the material.
